Troopers open fire on procession, 22 wounded
Mir TariqBandipora, Aug 25: Local authorites confirmed bullet and smoke-shell injuries to at least 22 persons during a firing incident at Ajas.The CRPF troopers, according to eyewitnesses, opened direct fire on a procession near Ajas when the mob was trying to breach curfew and march toward Srinagar.
A participant, Mushtaque Ahmad said the CRPF and army personnel had blocked the road but when the people tried to walk past the barricades they opened fire. "This resulted in a fierce clash in which more than thirty CRPF troopers were also injured." The eyewitnesses said that the marchers were carrying bamboos and sharpedged weapons however after comming under direct fire they were overpowered by the troopers . According to the Block Medical Officer, Abdul Rashid Wani, 22 persons were brought to the hospital where the doctors shifted eight to Srinagar. Dy SP Harmeet Singh said, "there were three armed militants amongst the marchers and they fired upon the Police and CRPF in which two jawans, each from Police and CRPF, were injured. They also ransacked a security picket. Many CRPF and Police cops have been injured in stone pelting." However the people participating in the march refuted the Police claim.
